Description

From the photographer: “Like an eye looking to the past, in the same way the composition of this image draws an eyelid thanks to the arc of the Milky Way and the distortion of the horizon. It is an eye that takes us back to the time of the construction of this small village whose origins date back to 1940. At that time we wanted to contrast the large estates and contribute to the colonization of the countryside. The village did not have a simple life from its origins due to the instability of the land on which it was built. During the Second World War, it became a German line hospital only to be abandoned during the advance of the allied troops. The caretaker of the village managed to save the sanitary material and 350 volumes of the village library but, following the abandonment of the garrison, the place was sacked. The village did not have a simple life even in the post-war years and, only recently, has it been the subject of a restoration of part of its buildings. In the image you can see on the right the church, now in ruins, with the bell tower about to fall and the building dedicated to the school. Above, on the village, the gaze turns to the depth of the universe that follows the evolution of human history that seems to repeat itself in a circle. Even today, many small Sicilian villages risk being abandoned due to the low birth rate and the emigration of many young people who find job opportunities in more productive areas of Italy. Among the wonders of the sky it is possible to observe the summer Milky Way, in full extension, which crosses the summer triangle delimited by the stars Deneb, Vega and Altair until it ends in the galactic center at the constellation of Sagittarius.”
