Description

Southern Milky Way from the constellation Orion and Taurus (at top right, with Jupiter) to the Southern Cross and Centaurus (lower left) where the lights of a camping site is visible. The Large Magellanic Cloud appears in the lower middle. In the center of this deep exposure, made with a modified DSLR camera, the extensive Gum nebula is visible. Gum 12 is an emission nebula that is hard to distinguish because it extends across 40° in the southern constellations Vela and Puppis. It is believed to be the greatly expanded (and still expanding) remains of a supernova that took place about a million years ago. © Juan Carlos Casado
