Omega Moon
Description
In these days Mt Etna has started its volcanic activity showing spectacular paroxysms. This morning, on 2021 February 27, the full moon was setting over the South East Crater. At the same time an occasional degassing activity came out of the craters which is usually a symptom of an impending eruption. As the moon approached the South East crater, its light was affected by heat exchange, creating refraction and mirage. Generally, this effect can be observed at sea level and on the water and not at an altitude of about 3300 meters. It is an inferior mirage called: Omega.
The lower edge of the Moon overturns on the edge of the crater anticipating its crossing. The entire lunar disk is also affected by the mirage, as it appears to be liquefying. I highly recommend you to observe a similar mirage close to the volcanic craters elsewhere in the world.
