Moonlight Panorama at Teide National Park

The 22-degree lunar halo is captured in this wide-field panoramic view of the World Heritage Teide National Park in Tenerife of Canary Islands. Visible at left is Teide volcano with its usual hat-like cloud around the peak. The famous Roque Cinchado (a gigantic volcanic rock formation) is notable in the foreground and Guajara mountains are on the right. The aboriginal Guanches who were living on this island used the word Echeyde for Mount Teide. It was a sacred mountain to them, like Mount Olympus was to the ancient Greeks. According to a legend the devil kidnapped the god of light and the sun and imprisoned him inside the volcano plunging the world into darkness until he was freed by the supreme god and since then the devil has been locked inside Teide.
