The Moon on a Roof

From the photographer: “Seven hours after the exact time of the full moon (2:35 p.m. CEST), the July full moon did not appear until after sunset, when it was already getting dark. From a vantage point 2.5 km away in a grain field outside the Hanseatic city of Greifswald, the moon first touched the roof of the church. St. Nikolai Cathedral is Greifswald’s largest city church and also serves as the city’s landmark. The Gothic brick structure was built in the 13th century, and its tower, standing nearly 100 meters tall, dominates the city skyline. It is the church where the famous painter Caspar David Friedrich was baptized. A few minutes after rising, the moon reached the striking and famous “onion dome” as seen from the observer’s vantage point.”
