Description

After a spectacular fly-by of Earth in late March of 1996, Comet Hyakutake moved with increasing speed sunward; its ion tail continued to grow, allowing it to remain a conspicuous object in the western evening sky until late April. This scene shows the zodiacal light with the comet above the aptly-named Mushroom Rock in Ellsworth County, Kansas.
