A Sublime Sight
Description
From the photographer: “The stars sparkle like gemstones in the sky. The centre of our home galaxy slowly rises in the south-east, reaches a wonderful height at 28° 45′ north in the south above the vast sea and the Canary Island of La Palma, and at the end of May each year, after the passage of the meridian, bends back towards the horizon in the south-west at the following dawn. Starting with the constellation of the Centaur (right in the picture), Scorpio and Sagittarius follow with the central part of the Milky Way, the Swan near the apex of the arc, until finally Cassiopeia, the famous celestial W, appears just above the horizon in the north-east (left in the picture). The panorama extends over an almost 180 degree wide arc, viewed over the mountains from a marvellous plateau, the Pico de la Cruz on La Palma.”
