Description

On the last day of International Dark Sky Week in 2021, I headed up to the Elan Valley (Wales) to spend some time under some truly dark skies before the snow kicked in. This image perfectly portrays the beauty and peace that one can experience away from light pollution. The Elan Valley is officially designated by the IDA as an International Dark Sky Park, protected against light pollution for the people who live there and the many visitors. I’m grateful to be able to spend a lot of time in this magical place throughout the year, but wish that such areas were not so scarce.
In the sky we have the Milky Way arch from Canis Minor to Cepheus with Mars shining above Taurus. The Zodiacal Light -sunlight scattered by interplanetary dust- rises above the strong snow clouds. In the foreground we have the Craig Goch Reservoir and Craig Goch Dam, one of the 6 dams of Elan Valley. The reservoir shows reflections of the zodiacal light and Mars.
