Watching Comet Hale-Bopp

From the photographer: “This photograph was taken in Hawaii in 1997 using an equatorial mount to compensate for the Earth’s rotation. The right side of the palm tree is close to Polaris, so there is little rotation in that part of the photograph, so the right side of the palm tree is relatively sharp. Further from Polaris, there is more rotation and therefore more blurring of the ground features, and the person watching the comet. The tree and person were lit by a light at the beach park on the north shore of Oahu where the photograph was taken.”
