Description

From the photographer: “The structure in this photo is called a windward (‘badgir’ in Persian). It has been used as a place for travelers of the past to find shelter from the heat of Iran’s deserts. A windward consists of four parts: framework, wardrobe, blades and ceiling. The framework of the windward is like a cube or charter. Its frame is often made like a square, rectangle, hexahedron or octagon. The main part of the windward structure has a net-like column which is located in the open air above the buildings. We can see very nice windwards in the city of Yazd in the central part of Iran.”
