Description

I was up on a 1700-m hilltop of the Andes about 40 km northeast of La Serena, Chile, for the total Solar eclipse. I had found the spot on a map many months before and the horizon profile looked really nice and clear, even with a view of distant ocean due southwest. Getting to the spot in person needed a 80 km car ride, with the latter 50 km on dirt roads. After slashing the left front tire on a sharp rock and replacing on the spot, I climbed up the remaining 200 m of elevation on foot with two bags full of equipment. Thankfully the wide open view at the top of the hill was really rewarding, with a view of the Pacific Ocean about 40 km away.
This is a wide angle view of the shadow cone drifting from left to right, with the beautiful eclipse and bright Venus in the middle. Several bright stars and two other planets around the eclipsed Sun were also captured as well, which can be identified using the annotated version.
