Rio Red Moon

The total lunar eclipse of 2004 May 4 as seen above the second largest city of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro. Rio was the capital of Brazil for almost two centuries, from 1763 to 1822, and from 1822 to 1960. The city is nicknamed A Cidade Maravilhosa, or “The Marvelous City” for its natural settings, Carnival celebrations, samba and other music, and hotel-lined tourist beaches. The giant statue of Jesus, known as Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado Mountain, which has recently been named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, is photographed in this image. As announced on TWAN website this image received a special mention in Dark Skies category of TWAN 2008 Earth and Sky regional Photo Contest for South America and India.
