Painted Desert at Night

The Milky Way arch rising over the Painted Desert in Petrified Forest National Park in Navajo and Apache counties in northeastern Arizona. Named for its large deposits of petrified wood, the park includes semi-desert shrub steppe and highly eroded and colorful badlands. Paleontologists have been unearthing and studying the park’s fossils since the early 20th century.
