Our Galactic Neighborhood

From the photographer: “This photo shows our own galaxy, The Milky Way, including our two satellite galaxies – The Magellan Clouds. The Small Magellanic cloud (SMC) is at the top left next to the beautiful globular cluster 47 Tucanae. The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is just below with the Tarantula Nebula. The southern milky way shows features from Crux to Sagittarius including Scorpius, the Pipe nebula, the Lagoon and Trifid nebulae, and the dark Coalsack nebula. The bright star at the bottom left is Canopus. The Magellan Clouds are only visible from the southern hemisphere, like from the dark skies of Azul. 330km south of Buenos Aires in Argentina the Clouds are almost circumpolar.”
