Description

From the photographer: “The image shows the Orion constellation at upper left side of the Cape Espichel Lighthouse, opened in 1790. In 1865 it was powered by oil, changing fuel in 1886, when its light has to be powered by incandescent oil vapor and, much later in 1926, by electricity. It measures 32 meters high and lies at an altitude of 168m. Presently, its luminous range is 42 nautical miles (about 67 km). I took this image on 27 January of 2010, in Cabo Espichel, (lit. Cape Espichel), a cape located to the west of Sesimbra, Portugal, about 40Km south of Lisbon.”
