As seen on the National Geographic News stars trail high over Nanda Devi, one of the highest peaks in India, in a long-exposure picture from northern India. A World Heritage Site, the mountain is renowned for its stark beauty and fields of alpine flowers.

Some 7,817 m (25,646 ft) tall, the mountain is famed in Hindu lore. Click on the second photo to see a sunset panorama of Nanda Devi and the nearby Himalayan peaks. The shadow of the Earth appears in dark blue below the peaks.
