Moon Eclipse from Modica
Description
From the photographer: “The lunar eclipse taken from the city of Modica, in southeastern Sicily. I hope you can enjoy the union of two kinds of beauty: the celestial spectacle culminating in the eclipse of the Moon, and the architectural baroque splendor of the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Cathedral of San Giorgio in Modica.
From my location the Moon rose already immersed in totality, making it initially very difficult to detect while still low on the horizon. As it climbed higher, the characteristic reddish hues of this celestial event became more apparent. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, so that Earth’s shadow darkens the lunar disk and gives it its distinctive red glow.”
