Description

From the photographer: “The red clouds are actually not light pollution, but extreme and very bright atmospheric airlgow. I obtained this image in 2014 and haven’t seen anything like that since then. In the foreground are the domes of 6.5m Magellan Telescopes on Las Campanas Observatory, Chile.”

This is a stunning beautiful picture, but the photographer should explain that it is a digitally-stitched panorama composite of many separate shots covering some 270 degrees or so. The milky way goes in a straight line across the night sky. It does not arc like this.
