Halos Around Partially Eclipsed Moon
Description
The International Year of Astronomy 2009 ended with a partial lunar eclipse, as seen on this view from Turkey on the last hour of 2009. Captured in this multi-exposure HDR composite image in partly cloudy skies over the city of Bursa, colorful atmospheric halos around the Moon are also recorded. The Moon’s southern edge is darkened in this moment of maximum eclipse (At maximum eclipse Umbra, or the Earth’s central shadow, covered only about 8 percent of the diameter of the lunar disk).

To be precise, the rings around the Moon depicted here are a beautiful example of a ‘corona’. They are the result of diffraction by cloud droplets and are technically distinct from halos (which result from refraction by ice crystals).
