First Glimpse to the Great American Eclipse

Featured on Astronomy Picture of the Day and National Geographic News. From the photographer: “Flying on the edge of stratosphere, some 400km off the coast of Oregon above the cloud-covered Pacific Ocean, this was the view on 2017 August 21 at about 10am Eastern Time from 45000 ft high. I was on assignment for National Geographic to capture the first photographs of the eclipse before it hits the coast and then across the US. Like all other eclipses I’ve seen the horizon colors were amazing but this time at such a high altitude the sky became pitch black, almost felt like flying in space. Wow!”

Amazing image, Babek!
August 28, 2017 at 7:10 pmLooking at the clouds from nine miles up, you begin to grasp the narrow extent of the moon’s shadow. You can not see that from the ground. Your photo gives one a very different perspective on the eclipse phenomenon than one has on the ground. It is indeed amazing.
September 1, 2017 at 2:48 amGreat photo, Babek! But we want to know the details. What equipment did you use? Settings, lenses and filters (if any)? What kind of aircraft were you in? A passenger airliner? Did you simply take the photo out a window? It seems too sharp and clear for that.
