Description

A multi-exposure image made from a timelapse sequence. From the photographer: “My journey to discover the historical places of Sicily continues. Today I take you to discover Castelluccio di Gela. It stands near the city on a chalk hill. Its function is purely defensive as can also be understood from the absence of embellishment elements. The oldest document in which Castelluccio is mentioned dates back to 1143. It is a notarial deed “with which Simone, count of Butera, donated the Arena of Catania, some lands located in the southern area, to the abbot of S. Nicolò of the county to have them put under cultivation: Castelluccio is cited as the boundary at the eastern end of the assets assigned to the monastery.” Over time, the castle became the property of various Sicilian families until in 1943, it was partially damaged by bombings during the Second World War. Today Castelluccio has been the subject of several restorations but, alas, after the latest intervention, it remains abandoned and freely accessible to anyone. This astronomical image, which has the task of embellishing this place, was taken on November 16th and shows a sickle moon setting towards the castle during the last warm glow of a colorful sunset that has imprinted itself in my memories. The Moon is located within the constellation of Sagittarius and near the star Kaus Media, or Delta Sgr, located to its lower left.”
