Description

A photo-composite of multiple exposures.

With cloudy skies set for almost a week, I decided to have a go photographing the latest comet from my homelands of Somerset.

Looking to the weather, I knew this would be a challenge from the get-go. With cloudy skies to the north, I had ideas for foreground attractions to capture the comet where initially – the weather originally looked favourable. However, in my travels, I noticed skies were hazy further afield with mist and fog. I stayed on higher land where for clear skies prevailed. For a moment in time, it felt like I was on an island in the sky; with shades of crimson all around me as day turned to night.

And then, skies got darker and there it was. What a beauty it was. The tail extending beyond my image!! Amazing to see such beautiful structure and even on closer inspection, the tail dividing into two.

Across the UK, reports of the Aurora were coming in as I took this image. Not visible with the unaided eye, but it is only when reviewing the images, I saw a pink cast to the lower third of the sky and  I have confirmed this is Diffuse Aurora amongst a hazy horizon. Could this image be a first to capture the comet and Aurora?
