Description

As seen on Astronomy Picture of the Day, in July 2015 Comet C/2014 Q1 (PanSTARRS) brightened quickly and unexpectedly. The comet rounded the Sun on 2015 July 6 and had shed quite a bit of gas and dust forming the large angular extent of its tails, barely visible to unaided eyes but easily recordable by telephoto images. The featured image is an HDR of a few exposures to cover the extreme dynamic range of the objects in the view. Here the Comet PanSTARRS is seen sporting a short white dust tail fading to the right, and a long blue ion tail pointing away from the recently set Sun. A crescent moon dominates the image center.
