Description

From the photographer: “In Greek mythology, the Big Dipper is linked to the story of the nymph Callisto, Artemis’ companion. Callisto had sworn chastity, but Zeus, who had fallen in love with her, seduced her. From their union, a son was born, Arcas. When the jealous Hera discovered what had happened, she transformed Callisto into a bear. Many years later, Arcas, now a young hunter, found himself face to face with the animal without knowing that it was his mother and was about to kill her. To avoid tragedy, Zeus intervened and lifted them both into the sky: Callisto became the constellation Ursa Major, while Arcas became Ursa Minor. However, Hera asked Poseidon to prevent them from ever bathing in the sea. For this reason, since then, the two constellations never set, remaining permanently visible in the northern sky.”
