Beaver Moon and the Fort
Description
From the photographer: “This is the time of year when beavers begin to take refuge in their huts, having accumulated sufficient supplies of food for the long winter ahead. During the period of the fur trade in North America, it was also the season to trap beavers for their thick, winter-ready skins. For this reason, the full moon of November is called the Beaver’s Moon.
In this image the Moon was taken shortly after sunset over the island of Capo Passero on which stands the Fort from which it takes its name. Wanted by the viceroy of Sicily Marcantonio Colonna in 1583 and finished under the reign of Philip III, king of Sicily and Spain between 1599 and 1635, it is the most important historical building. The sky, now blue, is still tinged with pink shades that color the small clouds on the horizon while some seagulls fly over the fort and then settle on the islet.”
