Description

From the photographer: “The Ashokan Reservoir Promenade is a wonderful place to witness the aurora. This was my 5th time. There were approximately 30-40 other people present to witness the great aurora storm of May 10th. After posting my success on Facebook last year, in The Hudson Valley In Pictures group, many people wanted to see what I saw, and this was a perfect opportunity. After 6 successive solar flares of X-Class intensity, the KP index jumped to 9, a value I have never personally seen before.

I brought my parents to the promenade to witness a once in a lifetime event. I wanted to capture a timelapse of this intensity in the hope of capturing an excitation wave (seen in the video around 6 seconds in). The pillars, colors, and movement was very apparent and visible to the naked eye. Though not as vibrant as the photographs, I would describe the colors and pillars as muted, compared to aurora I’ve seen in Iceland. It was a very impressive sight to witness, in some of the darkest skies south of Albany NY.”
