Description

From the photographer: “Where do astronomers stay at the observatory? Not at the telescopes, as one might think. Here is a panoramic view of Carnegie Las Campanas observatory in Chile where in the foreground (and on the left) you can see comfortable dormitories for both astronomers and observatory’s personnel. On the right side, farther away you can see the 6.5-m Magellan telescopes. In fact the distance is not that large and many astronomers prefer to walk to the telescopes, instead of driving. The night sky was colorful again (green and red colors are due to airglow) but at the same time it was clear enough to witness the Gegenschein – a faint whitish glow at the upper left side of the image.”
