Arctic Eclipse
Description
Wide-angle view of the 2015 March 20 total solar eclipse with the shadow cone of the Moon visible above Longyearbyen, Svalbard, at 78 degrees north. From the photographer: “Apart from Venus, which became nicely visible about 10 minutes before totality I did not spot any other celestial objects. Also no aurora was visible at totality and I suspect not many people looked for it during the precious 2 minutes 25 minutes of totality! The corona was one of the best I can remember since my first totality in 1999.” Click on the second photo to see a closeup telephoto view of the diamond ring right before totality, the last bit of photosphere before it disappeared to unveil a myriad of prominences and a fine arc of corona.

March 21, 2015 at 6:37 amWow, these pictures are really very good! I was there as Well, possibly a bit close to the hills. My 14th total eclipse and only the second where it was clear from the beginning until the end. Maybe most beautiful eclipse ever. I remember especially the streamer at 5 o’clock.
