Description

This telephoto image made by a camera on a tracking mount to follow the stars during the exposure, frames a part of the constellation Orion through a window in the ruins of an ancient castle in Sweden. Notable in the “window” are the Flame Nebula near the bright star Zeta Orionis at Orion’s belt and the Horsehead dark cloud embedded in the large red emission IC 434 nebula. This is not a composite or a photo-montage. It is a single exposure. The challenge of going deep in this real landscape astrophoto was achieved using a fast lens, high sensitivity of a modified DSLR camera, a skyglow filter to increase the nebulosity contrast, and applying not too long exposure to avoid the landscape getting blurred by the tracking mount. Click on the second photo to see a wide-angle nightscape view of the castle where the Pleiades star cluster (M45) can be seen above the castle. Planet Jupiter appears through the trees.
