Description

A Galactic Evening on La Palma, Canary Islands. The bright central bulge of the Milky Way emerges from the fading twilight over the Caldera de la Taburiente. The 10-km wide volcanic crater (with walls tower 2000m above the caldera floor) dominates a large part of the island. The caldera is originated some 2 million years ago with a massive shield volcano. On the top of the caldera (visible to the right), 2400m high, is the Roque de los Muchachos astronomical observatory. The image is made during Astromaster La Palma, the TWAN annual international workshop & photo tour on the island.
