Description

Winter stars in the northern hemisphere are lined above the western horizon of Saarland, Germany. A tall monolith menhir (a large upright standing stone installed and used by ancient people) decorates this moonlit view. This 6.6 meter monolith dates back to 4000 years ago. It is the tallest Menhir in Germany, known as Gollenstein. As noted by the photographer “60 kilometers from my hometown I found a relatively dark area and this 4000 year old surprise. This Limestone menhir was broken up in 1939 to avoid it being used for spotting by French artillery, but it was repaired in 1951.”
