TWAN is the Special Project of International Year of Astronomy

2008 February 25

IYA2009 is a major effort to bring awareness of the importance of astronomy and its contributions to civilization. Celebrating the 400th anniversary of the first astronomical observations with a telescope by Galileo Galilee, IYA2009 is primarily sponsored by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), the international professional astronomy organization, and UNESCO. The designation of 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy was made by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2007. Projects, programs and activities of many kinds are planned for IYA2009.

In mid-February 2008 the IAU working group for IYA2009 announced TWAN as special project of International Year of Astronomy 2009.

Because of the importance of IYA2009 and the great opportunities it presents, the focus of TWAN will be on creating the TWAN photo bank and creating major world-wide exhibitions and supporting material, including books and DVDs, towards fulfilling the responsibilities of an IYA2009 Special Project through the end of 2009. TWAN has aleardy started to search for exhibition venues around the world and to plan various events in 2008 and 2009.

TWAN will continue after 2009 with expanded image collection, more exhibitions and supporting material, and other means of communicating with the public, including television programs.
