Description

Below this stunning view of the Milky Way is the Atlantic Ocean and the William Herschel Telescope located in the observatory of Roque de los Muchachos in La Palma, Canary Islands. The observatory is near the highest point of the island at the edge of a caldera, about 2400 meters above see level. Move the slider on the image to recognize stars and figures in this view. Bright star Deneb at the tail of Cygnus, the Swan, is notable on the left, close to the red emission North America Nebula. Near the image top is the Cassiopeia with its known “W” shape. Don’t miss our large neighboring cosmic island on the top left, Andromeda Galaxy or M31.
