Sahara under Moonlight
Starry sky and the Milky Way in the constellations Scorpius and Sagittarius above a stark moonlit landscape in Tassili National Park, in the heart of the Sahara desert in southern Algeria. The bright yellow-orange star above the eroded sandstone cliffs is Antares, the alpha star of Scorpius, the Scorpion. Click the second photo to see a day-light panoramic view of this bizarre location. Prehistoric skygazers surely witnessed a similar sky. In addition to dramatic sandstone formations, the Tassili region is noted for rock paintings and archaeological sites dating to neolithic times.
