Description

The Great Carina Nebula (NGC 3372) in a single exposure photograph through a telephoto lens, above one of the dishes on ALMA radio telescopes, an array of 66 radio telescopes located at 5000 meters high in the Chilean Altiplano. The nebula gets its red and purple hues from hot hydrogen gas. It sits about 7,500 light-years away in the constellation of the same name. It is also home to one of the brightest stars in the Milky Way galaxy, Eta Carinae. Although Carina Nebula is some four times as large and even brighter than the famous Orion Nebula, it is much less well known, due to its location far in the Southern sky. Next to the nebula in this image is NGC 3532 open cluster, also known as the Football Cluster or the Wishing Well Cluster. Click on the second photo to see a slightly wider angle view of this scene.
