Over the Lights of Longyearbyen
Description
Jupiter and constellation Leo appear in a deep polar twilight above the arctic landscape of Longyearbyen, Svalbard, at 78 degrees north. From the photographer: “There was a small aurora over the town which looks like the continuation of the floodlights on the tower of the abandoned gondola line that used to carry coal from the mines.” Click the second photo to see another image of the night with old fishing materials arranged as an artwork by the coast. “This was as dark as it could get, imaged at 1 am, on the night of vernal equinox when the Sun was 12 degrees below the northern horizon.”
