Once the World's Largest Telescope

A clear starry night at Birr Castle and the 72-inch telescope, the world’s largest telescope in 19th century owned by the third Earle of Rosse who made pioneering observations with this giant eye. It was constructed in 1845 and was used for several decades and now has been restored and is open to the public. Birr Castle is located in the town of Birr in County Offaly, Ireland. This photo has taken during the Whirlpool Starparty 2007. The Star Party is Irelands premier annual astronomical event orgainised by the Shannonside astronomy club.
