Description

Mazzarino Castle stands on a hill about 580 meters high. The Sicilians have nicknamed the castle with the name “u Cannuni” (the cannon) because of its cylindrical tower which, resembling a cannon, seems to point directly towards the sky. The date of construction of the castle is not certain but what is known is that it was bought by the Branciforti family at the end of the thirteenth century. There is a legend linked to the Castle and to the construction of the town of Mazzarino. It tells of two powerful lords, one from Mazarin and the other from Garsiliato who challenged each other in an armed duel for those who had to build a city under their own castle.
The fate fell to the noble of Mazarin that tradition identifies precisely with a member of the Branciforti family.
Currently the castle is partially destroyed. It consisted of four towers and the walls that enclosed the public buildings. The external wall that surrounds the manor developed for 186 meters of perimeter. The towers rose 3 floors connected by internal stone stairs. Two of them seem to have housed the rooms for the dwelling while the other two towers had defensive functions.
The position of the castle seems to project it towards the sky. Its towers are illuminated by the light of the country. It is a perfect scenario to immortalize the rising of the super moon of 2021, waiting for it to position itself exactly above the ruins, challenging the mist pushed by the sirocco wind. For a moment, time seems to stand still. Memory runs to the past; I wonder how people lived inside the castle, what legends and heroic deeds took place in this place … a thought that … and why not? refers to the Arthurian cycle … a small Camelot in the heart of Sicily. Basically we are one people under one sky.
