Earth Hour

The dramatic dimming of city lights during Earth Hour 2009 is revealed by taking identical photographic exposures of the city during the Earth Hour 2009 as shown above and just before (click on the second photo). As noted by the photographer “I’d set up my cameras to photograph Earth Hour 2009, from the beautiful vantage point of South Perth foreshore, overlooking the Swan River, towards the center of Perth city. Moments before the beginning of Earth Hour, I heard splashes in the river. Then a large fin was spotted, and we realized two large dolphins were swimming towards us, close to shore. My cameras were set up on the edge of the water, and the nearest dolphin swam right up to me, turned around quickly to catch a fish and splashed me, before swimming on! Moments later, Earth Hour began, with many of the city lights turning off, bringing a clearer view of the night sky. A dolphin close encounter, and a magical moment!

Earth Hour is a global event organized by World Wide Fund for Nature and is held on the last Saturday of March annually, asking households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.
