Description

Starry night of Chiloé Island in the Pacific Ocean in southern Chile. The arrival of the Spanish and Jesuit missionaries starting in the 16th century resulted in the construction of hundreds of small wooden churches in an attempt to convert local residents to Christianity. These unique buildings have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island was also visited by Darwin in 1834. Notable in the background sky, from bottom left to top right, are the Pleiades Star Cluster, the V-shape face of the Taurus or the bull, prominent figure of Orion or the hunter (as seen upside down from the southern hemisphere), and Sirius, the brightest star in our night sky.
