Description

From the photographer: “From 23/04/2022 begins the week dedicated to the enhancement of the dark sky against light pollution. For this reason I have decided to publish this image today. It shows the city of Ispica in Sicily during the blue hour. A sickle moon is about to set but is virtually hit by this ray of light projected towards the sky.

Ispica is a very beautiful city with different elements of the Sicilian Baroque and I think it can become even more fascinating thanks to a skilful use of city lighting. Although on average the country appears to be properly lit, it is clear that its churches are not. They appear as patches of light that have no reason to exist. The beauty of these places does not depend on the amount of light used. It would be enough to reduce it by a factor of 3 to harmonize the churches with the rest of the city. Finally, the use of this ray of light directed towards the sky appears completely unjustified. In the past, these beams were used to easily track certain places. Today, thanks to satellite navigators, it is completely useless to use these artifices, especially since the wise use of energy resources is today a theme shared by all in an attempt to reduce global warming.”
