Shooting Dinosaurs

The Milky Way and impressive sculptures scattered around the desert community of Borrego Springs, California, where TWAN member Dennis Mammana regularly holds his sky photography for beginners workshops. With a summertime population of far less than 3,000 and surrounded by a thousand square miles of the Anza-Borrego Desert, the community doesn’t produce much light pollution and enjoys one of the darkest skies in Southern California. From the photographer: “This is one of dozens of metal sculptures created by Ricardo Breceda. The moon had already risen in the east so the Milky Way and the starry heavens became a bit anemic, but the moonlight produced some beautiful highlights in the scene, so I quickly set up to capture my friend Ken Lee shooting the dinosaurs.” © Dennis Mammana
