Comet Pons-Brooks Above Entella Rock
Description
A photo composite of multiple exposures. From the photographer: “Nestled in the countryside of the Belice Valley stands the fortress of Entella. A place made even more evocative thanks to the agglomerates of gypsum crystals that make up its rock formations and shine in the scorching sun of our land. To the north of the high ground is Lake Garcia, but the view from its summit sweeps over the entire surrounding horizon.
Above the stronghold was built the city of Entella currently being studied. The city has been a major player in the history of Sicily and is often mentioned by historians such as Thucydides and Deodorus Siculus. Involved in the First Punic War, the city was liberated by the Greek leader Timoleon. “…Mentioned again in connection with the First Punic War, following which Sicily entered the orbit of Rome, Entella is later recalled by Cicero for the robberies suffered by Verres. From Pliny we know that in the first century AD the city was a tributary of Rome, counted among the stipendiary cities.” Among the many archaeological finds at Entella are the decrees: “…official texts of the community of the Entellines (only one is from another city, Nakone), are written in the Greek Doric dialect of Sicily and are engraved on bronze tablets intended for display in public buildings.” In this image, the fortress fits into the naturalistic context of the valley by being embellished by the presence of some clouds hanging in the sky and the Pons-Brooks comet.”
