Description

From the photographer: “Immersed in vast fields used for agricultural exploitation, the tower of Albospino which takes its name from the district, occupies the space of a limestone rocky spur and adapts perfectly to it, assuming an irregular polygonal shape. According to various scholars. its dating dates back to the Swabian period, however the oldest document that mentions the tower states that the construction took place in the 17th century by the barons of Camopetro di Caltagirone, owners of the vast agricultural estates since the Norman period. , built in a high place from which you had a very broad view not only of the possessions but also of the access roads in particular towards the North-West, it was a real watchtower in order to monitor any encroachments of the feudal lords of Raddusa and Castel di Iudica . Until a few years ago the tower was in good condition apart from some large cracks in the area of the ancient entrance which and led to a disastrous collapse. It is characterized by the presence of two elevations connected by a narrow staircase embedded in the masonry and covered by lowered arches, while the light points are guaranteed by small square windows on the lower floor and wider on the upper floor. The construction technique is not very refined as the walls are made up of local rocks not hewn and bound with abundant mortar mixed with brick reinforcement. Only the cantonals have a reinforcement in squared limestone blocks. There are clear signs of transformation, perhaps into a rural home, which led to the roofing of the upper terrace with different masonry techniques. Text from siciliafotografica.it.”
