Photo Report: TWAN in Australia
TWAN events in Australia started in spring 2009 by exhibitions in Perth but it continued during summer of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 on the other side of the continent in Sydney. The World at Night exhibit was displayed as part of the annual Ultimo Science Festival (18 â 29 August 2009), a popular science event staged by four educational institutions in Sydney – The ABC (Governmental broadcaster), Powerhouse Museum, University of Technology and Ultimo College of TAFE (technical and further education). World-known night sky photographer and TWAN member David Malin, was the invited lecturer to present TWAN. The exhibition continued in Sydney in September at the art gallery of Bondi Pavilion Cultural Center, located at the iconic Bondi Beach. The popular Festival of Winds at the Bondi Beach (Sep. 13) brought many visitors to the exhibition. November was a highlight of the events when TWAN exhibit opened at Astrofest 2009, where thousands of people celebrated the International Year of Astronomy, at Western Australiaâs biggest annual public astronomy event. The event was held at Curtin University Stadium in Perth. Besides TWAN exhibit, astronomers and photographers were invited to enter their astrophotography in a contest entitled âWestern Australia at Nightâ which was organized by TWAN member John Goldsmith. TWAN was also featured by an 8-page photo gallery in the Dec. 2009/Jan. 2010 issue of COSMOS; Australian leading popular science magazine. TWAN events will continue in Australia during 2010 and beyond and venues with interest to hold the exhibits and workshops are welcomed to contact us.
