Lick Observatory

From the photographer: “Built between 1876 and 1887, Lick observatory is the first permanent mountain-top observatory. On 1888 it had the largest refracting telescope (James Lick Telescope with 91cm or 36 inch aperture). By now it is still in operation for public outreach and college courses (inside the dome on the right). Following activities to reducing light pollution in 1980s, San Jose replaced all street lights to low pressure sodium lamps. The lights can be removed from observations using astronomical filters. This is why the building is yellow!”
