Description

From the photographer: “The photo shows the Kalte Rinne viaduct of the Semmering railway under a clear, starry sky. The Milky Way arches over the viaduct, while the trails of a passing train can be seen on top of the building. The Semmering Railway, constructed between 1848 and 1854, is considered the first mountain railway ever built. Along the track length of 41 kilometers, it leads through 14 tunnels, over 16 viaducts and numerous smaller bridges. The railway is famous for the beautiful harmony with the landscape it crosses. In 1998, the Semmeringbahn was the first railway to be listed by the UNESCO as World Heritage.”
