New Zealand under moonlight

Date: 2010 July 4

In early morning hours of northern New Zealand, the last quarter Moon has illuminated landscape near Tongariro National Park. From this vantage point, all three volcanoes can be seen due south. Higher Ruapehu (2797 m) is to the right of Tongariro (1969 m) and Ngauruhoe (2291 m). The strange looking trees and tree ferns of New Zealand can be seen more easily with the moonlight. Bright Canopus, the second brightest star of night sky, is on the left with the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds above it. The Southern Cross and bright stars of Centaurus (Alpha and Beta) are notable at right along the band of the southern Milky Way. Tunc Tezel
