Perseus in Gotland

By: P-M Heden

Region: Europe

Site: Gotland - Sweden

Date: August 2008

Stars of Perseus (top), Auriga (lower left), and the Pleiades Star Cluster (right) shine above Gotland, the largest island in the Baltic Sea. A meteor from Perseid meteor shower is captured near the shower's radiant in the constellation Perseus. Gotland which was under water for 400 million years is made up of a sequence of sedimentary rocks. The limestone rocks with fascinating shapes on the island today are locally called Raukar and many of them are in fact very old coral reefs. P-M Heden/
