Honolulu Lights vs. the Milky Way

By: Jason Chu

Hawaii, USA

2015 September 12

A Notable Photo of the 2016 International Earth & Sky Photo Contest
From the photographer: "The Milky Way almost vertical on the left over the Pacific ocean, with the lights of downtown Honolulu and world-famous Waikiki dominating the rest of the panorama. It illustrates the problem of light pollution from Honolulu, and how bright and easily it overwhelms the Milky Way. Furthermore it illustrates the increasing prevalence of people unaware what lies in the night sky.
Technical details: D800 + 14-24 lens, 17mm, 20 sec., f/2.8, ISO 100"
